How to brief in two minutes
Show the zone, don’t just say it
Point at the landmarks on the card from the beach: the buoys, the pier, the headland. People remember what they saw.
Check the wind before every rental
Wind blowing from the land out to sea feels calm on the beach and gets stronger further out. On those days keep paddlers close in, or stop rentals.
Make the lifejacket a rule, not a tip
Hand it over already adjusted, check the buckle. Kids first.
Say which number to call
Most trouble is a tired paddler or a broken paddle — that is a call to you. Real danger is a call to the emergency number, straight away.
Give them the card
In a waterproof pouch with their phone. A phone is only useful if it’s on them, charged, and in a pouch.
General guidance — follow your local rules and your own judgement.
Questions
What should a rental safety briefing cover?
At least the area customers may use, the time they must be back, the wind (especially offshore wind), the equipment they must wear, and what to do and whom to call if something goes wrong. For motorized rentals, Transport Canada's rental boat safety checklist sets what you must cover with renters who have no Pleasure Craft Operator Card.
Where does the rescue number come from?
From the rescue-centre data VesselSOS keeps for its app and website, with the official source and the date it was checked. You can change both fields — always check them for your spot before you print.
Why “call us first” for small problems?
A tired paddler or a lost paddle is something your staff can solve fastest, and it keeps the emergency line free. If anyone is in danger, customers should call the emergency number straight away — the card says so.
What is the QR code on the card?
It opens the free VesselSOS app in the App Store (Android later). Its SOS screen shows the position and calls the rescue centre for those waters.

Fleet for your craft
Know where every rental is.
VesselSOS Fleet is the rental dashboard we're building with pilot operators for the 2027 season: check customers out by QR, see every rental live on one map, call them back when the wind turns. Their phone is the tracker.
