Anyone who hires out small ships needs a licence from Transport Malta (the Authority), whether the craft are motorised or not and whether the hirer drives or not. The same applies to running a boat-driving school, a water-ski school or water-ski facilities. The applicant must be 18. The licence lists the registration number of every craft covered and must be displayed at the office.

Driving a motorised small ship normally requires a Transport Malta nautical licence (18+) and third-party insurance.
