We have not found the list of waters the Chief Executive has specified for licence-free hire of jet skis and small motor dinghies, or the practical and written instruction hirers must receive. Ask Marine Safety SA before offering licence-free hire.
Part 8 of the Harbors and Navigation Act allows South Australia to licence businesses that hire out vessels, but only for classes of vessels declared by regulation. We found no such class declared in the Harbors and Navigation Regulations 2023.
We have not confirmed whether South Australia's lifejacket, PWC operating-hours and equipment rules in the Harbors and Navigation Regulations 2023 apply to hire vessels operated as domestic commercial vessels.
Local councils may require approval to hire out boats from council land or waters (for example the Town of Gawler). We have not reviewed council rules.
