“No power-driven vessel of greater capacity than 4 brake horse power or 3 kilowatts, according to the manufacturers’ specification for engine measurement, shall be navigated by a person under the age of 16 years.”
Registering the craft
-
You must not bring, keep, let for hire or use any powered boat on Windermere unless it is registered with the Lake District National Park Authority. That includes outboard and electric motors. Registrations run from 1 January to 31 December, and the number and annual marks must be shown on both sides of the hull.

“4. No owner or other person lawfully or wrongfully having the command, charge or management of a power driven vessel shall cause it to be brought, kept, let for hire or used on the lake unless it is registered with the Authority as provided by byelaw 5.”
-
The Authority confirms that business boats need a current Windermere registration too, and that the master of an unregistered boat can be prosecuted.
Show the official wording
“All powered boats on Windermere, whether in use, moored, for private use or business must have a current Windermere Registration. This includes any boat with an outboard or electric motor or any other mechanical means of propulsion.”
Local rules and by-laws

Powered boats must not exceed 10 knots on the open lake. The byelaws' "miles per hour" means nautical miles per hour.
Show the official wording
“no master of a power-driven vessel shall cause or permit it to be navigated at a greater speed than 10 miles per hour (10 knots) through those waters of the lake which fall outside the areas defined for the purposes of byelaw 12.1 (a) to (d) inclusive;”
-
In the designated 6-knot areas no vessel may exceed 6 knots, and a powered boat towing another vessel is limited to 6 knots everywhere. See the Authority's speed limit map.
Show the official wording
“12.1 No master of a vessel shall cause or permit it to be navigated at a greater speed than 6 miles per hour (6 knots) through the waters of the Lake in any of the following areas:”

Powered boats must not tow any inflatable device (such as ringos or banana boats).
Show the official wording
“6.15. No master of a power-driven vessel shall cause or permit it to be used for the purposes of towing any inflatable device.”
Reporting accidents
-
After an accident causing damage or injury, every vessel involved must stop, and masters must exchange names, addresses and vessel details on request. If details are not exchanged, report the accident to an authorised officer within 24 hours.
Show the official wording
“If for any reason details are not exchanged then the accident shall be reported to an authorised officer as soon as is practicable and in any case within 24 hours.”

What we looked for and could not confirm from an official source. Ask the authority before you assume anything here.
We have not checked whether Westmorland and Furness Council licenses hire boats on Windermere under s. 94 of the 1907 Act, or what its conditions are.
Other Lake District lakes (Ullswater, Coniston Water, Derwentwater) have their own byelaws, which we have not checked.
We have not listed the boundaries of the 6-knot zones. See the Authority's Windermere speed limit map.
