What must a rental craft carry in Belgium?
The required safety equipment for a rental SUP, kayak, jet ski, motorboat and sailboat — every line with the section of the act and a link to it. Then what to tell customers at check-out.
Covers pleasure craft up to and including 24 m in private use, on Belgian and foreign waters, by zone: a general list (annex 1), shorter lists for jet skis (annex 2) and small sailing dinghies (annex 3), and, from the 2026 rules (KB chapter 7), the kit for surf sports, jet skis, canoes and kayaks at sea. Commercial use adds items not shown here. Sport keelboats (annex 4) and the named closed waters of zone 0 are not covered by the Kit Finder.
Belgian law sorts the water into zones 1–7. Pick the zone you go out in; the list follows it. A boat registered without a zone limit must always carry at least the zone 4 kit, and one registered for zones 0–3 only at least the zone 1 kit (KB art. 3.73). Since 23 January 2026 surf sports, jet skis, canoes and kayaks may not go beyond 2 nm. The annex tables were read from the Official Gazette images — check the FOD Mobiliteit checklist too.

What our research found about rentals and commercial use:
- Commercial use of a pleasure craft adds further items to the annex lists, which are not shown here. MB 12.11.2020, bijlage 1 · source · Rules checked 15 October 2026
General guidance: the lists below are the equipment rules for recreational craft. Hiring craft out is a business, and some countries add rules for rental or commercial craft, or ask for a permit. Before the season, check with FOD Mobiliteit en Vervoer — DG Scheepvaart or the local harbour master which rules apply to your fleet.
SUP board rental
Worked out for One paddler on a SUP board, no engine, by day.
Required 0
The federal rules do not name paddle boards. Launched from the beach at sea, a SUP may count as a surf sport (KB art. 7.8: wetsuit, buoyancy vest and a distress means, not beyond 2 nm) — check with the FOD Mobiliteit. No items are shown.
No statutory equipment for this craft in the waters checked.

GENERAL GUIDANCE- Fit the buoyancy aid and say whether wearing it is required here (see “Licence, lifejacket and charter rules”).
- Show the leash: coiled ankle leash on flat water, quick-release waist leash on rivers and in current.
- Point out the area they may use, the swimming zones and the boat traffic, on a map.
- Offshore wind: kneel or lie on the board, paddle across the wind towards the nearest shore — not back to base.
- Agree the return time and how you will contact them.
- How to call for help: phone in a waterproof pouch, the rescue number below, stay with the board.
Not a legal requirement — a starting point for your own briefing. Your insurer or local rules may ask for more.

- Quick-release waist leashMoving water demands a quick-release waist leash — an ankle leash in current is a hazard, not a safety device.
- Coiled ankle leashFlatwater. Your board is your biggest flotation device; stay attached to it.
- Buoyancy aid, 50 N (CE)A belt-pack inflatable is unobtrusive enough that people actually wear it.
- Floating waterproof phone pouchFloating, on you, not strapped to the board.
- Drysuit or thick wetsuitCold shock off a paddleboard is the classic early-season incident.
- Whistle on the vestCosts nothing, carries far.

Kayak / canoe rental
Worked out for One paddler in a kayak or canoe, no engine, by day.
Required 2
Zone 1 (inland) · Zone 2 (Sea Scheldt) On inland waters and the Lower Sea Scheldt the federal rules set no kit for canoes and kayaks in private use (only for commercial use, KB art. 3.77); regional rules may apply. At sea, up to 2 nm, KB art. 7.12 applies — pick zone 4 (≤ 2 nm).
Zone 3 (harbours) · Zone 4, 2–6 nm · Zone 5, 6–60 nm Not allowed: since 23 January 2026 surf sports, jet skis, canoes and kayaks may not go beyond 2 nm from the coast or use the Belgian coastal harbours (a jet ski may leave a harbour to go to sea), nor swimming, buffer and safety zones; surf sports and kayaks are also banned between sunset and sunrise (KB art. 7.3). No list is shown.
- Buoyancy aid, 50 N (CE)per person
Canoes and kayaks at sea: inside a launch zone (within ¼ nm) everyone wears a swim vest; outside it, up to 2 nm, everyone wears a swim vest or lifejacket that suits them, and clothing suited to the sea temperature (KB art. 7.12).
MB 12.11.2020 KB art. 7.12 §1 · source - Distress means for board sports (one of the options in the rule)
Canoes and kayaks outside the launch zone (up to 2 nm): a suitable means of sending distress signals aboard, preferably one that gives your position (KB art. 7.12). The law gives no list for kayaks; the surf-sports list (pyrotechnics, waterproof phone, VHF, PLB) is a fair guide.
