Rules in Lake Taupō

Briefing and checklist before each hire

  • If you provide any vessel for hire on Lake Taupō, you must tell the person operating it what the Lake Taupō bylaw requires. Build the bylaw rules (lifejackets, speed, communication, PWC rules) into your hirer briefing.

    Show the official wording
“Any person providing any vessel for remuneration, hire or reward must: (a) advise any operator of the requirements of this bylaw;”

Jet skis (PWC)

  • Everyone on a jet ski, and anyone being towed (even at under 5 knots), must wear a properly secured lifejacket.

    Show the official wording
“2.2.3 Every person on board a personal watercraft or being towed (including at a speed of less than 5 knots) must wear a properly secured personal flotation device, unless rule 91.4(8)(a) or (b) applies.”
  • Every jet ski used on the lake must be registered with a regional council. The registration number must be shown on both sides above the waterline, clearly legible and at least 90 mm high.

    Show the official wording
“2.15.1 Every personal watercraft used in or on the waters of the Lake must be registered with a regional council.”

Safety equipment on board

  • Every vessel you hire out must be seaworthy and carry the safety equipment the bylaw requires.

    Show the official wording
“(b) provide a seaworthy vessel; and (c) provide safety equipment in compliance with this bylaw.”
  • On Lake Taupō, everyone on board any vessel of 6 m or less must wear a properly secured lifejacket at all times while it is making way, unless the Harbourmaster has given prior written approval. This covers hire boats and jet skis, not only private craft.

    Show the official wording
“2.2.1 Every person on board a vessel that is 6 metres or less in length overall must wear a properly secured personal flotation device at all times while the vessel is making way, unless prior written approval is obtained from the harbourmaster (for example, for ceremonial purposes).”
  • Every vessel must carry at least one means of communication that can reach a person on land from anywhere it will operate and lasts the whole trip. On vessels of 6 m or less it must be waterproof or kept in a waterproof bag. SUPs used only for surf riding are exempt. Supply or check this for each hire.

    Show the official wording
“2.18.1 Every skipper must carry on board their vessel at least one means of communication that: (a) has the ability to communicate with a land based person from any area where the vessel is intended to be operated; (b) has sufficient coverage and power to operate for the actual duration of the voyage; and (c) if the vessel is 6 metres or less in length, is either waterproof or is carried in a waterproof bag or container.”

Permits and licences for the business

  • A note in the bylaw says any commercial activity on Taupō Waters, which includes a hire business, needs approval and a licence to operate from the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board.
